It helps leadership and project teams bring relevant perspectives, values, signals, risks, opportunities and existing information into one connected process — building shared understanding before consequential decisions are made.

What is systemic synthesis?

Systemic synthesis is the practice of connecting different forms of information and perspectives to understand a situation as part of a wider system. Rather than examining risks, opportunities, stakeholders, values or strategic objectives in isolation, Contextscanner© helps reveal how they relate, where tensions exist and what those relationships could mean for the decision at hand.

Where does the Contextscanner© methodology come from?

Contextscanner© builds on strategic facilitation, interactive workshop design and applied organisational work developed through Sparks Visual since 2019. The methodology has been continuously refined through work with teams across different organisational contexts, bringing together considerations including values, strategy, risk, opportunities, stakeholders and action. The digital platform translates that accumulated practice into a collaborative environment for systemic synthesis.

How is Contextscanner© different from a strategy or decision-making tool?

Contextscanner© starts one step earlier. Before asking What should we do?, it helps teams examine What are we seeing? What are we missing? What matters here? And from whose perspective? It connects strategic direction with values, risk, stakeholder perspectives, emerging signals and intended impact — areas that are often considered separately. The result is not simply another recommendation. It is a more transparent understanding of the context from which a decision emerges.

Is Contextscanner© a risk management tool?

Risk is an important part of Contextscanner©, but not the whole picture. The framework connects risks with opportunities, objectives, values, stakeholders, perspectives and impact. Risk profiling also helps teams explore how attitudes towards uncertainty influence the way risks and opportunities are interpreted. Contextscanner© can therefore complement existing risk management processes rather than replace them.

Question 6

Isn't good leadership already supposed to do this?

Yes. Contextscanner© doesn't claim that reflection, perspective-taking, risk awareness or values-driven decision-making are new. The challenge is that these practices are often fragmented across meetings, functions, frameworks, documents and individual minds. Contextscanner© provides a structured environment for bringing them together — making systemic consideration of context more collaborative, visible and repeatable. The innovation is not that context matters. It is making systemic consideration of context practicable.

What kinds of decisions is Contextscanner© designed for?

Contextscanner© becomes particularly useful when the stakes are meaningful, the context is changing, information is fragmented, or different people see the situation differently. This can include strategic direction, transformation programmes, major projects, investments, organisational change, risk and opportunity assessment, stakeholder-sensitive decisions and other situations where a decision needs to hold beyond the moment in which it was made.

Do we have to complete the entire journey?

No. Contextscanner© is designed for different depths of engagement. Teams can enter through a focused Quick Scan, use Strategic Reflection to explore a particular situation, or move through the complete Values Driven Journey. Individual milestones can also be revisited as circumstances change. Context changes. Understanding can evolve with it.

How does collaboration work?

Contextscanner© enables teams to think together, apart. Participants can first contribute independently before seeing the collective picture. This creates space for different perspectives to emerge before the group begins interpreting them together. Responses can then be brought together to reveal patterns, alignment, tensions and differences in interpretation. The purpose is not to eliminate disagreement. Sometimes disagreement is precisely where important information sits.

Does Contextscanner© produce consensus?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily — and that is intentional. Consensus can be useful, but apparent agreement can also conceal different assumptions, priorities or interpretations. Contextscanner© makes those differences more visible so teams can understand them before deciding how to proceed. The aim is shared understanding, not agreement for its own sake.

What happens when new information emerges?

It becomes part of the context. Contextscanner© is designed as a continuous practice rather than a one-time assessment. New signals, stakeholder input or changing circumstances can prompt teams to revisit assumptions, update their understanding and adapt decisions where necessary. Decisions can therefore retain the reasoning behind them while remaining responsive to change.

AI supports the sense-making process. It can help scan information, identify patterns and signals, surface potential tensions, synthesise contributions and accelerate reflection. It does not determine what an organisation should value or make the final decision. AI can help us see more. Human judgement determines what it means.

Does AI make recommendations or decisions for us?

Accepted Answer

No. Contextscanner© is designed to support judgement, not outsource it. AI-supported synthesis remains open to human review and interpretation. Strategic choices, trade-offs and accountability remain with the people making the decision.

Can Contextscanner© use information we already have?

Accepted Answer

Contextscanner© is being designed to build on existing organisational knowledge rather than creating another isolated information environment. This can include relevant structured and unstructured information from internal and external sources. As the platform develops, integrations with organisational systems and data environments can enable existing information to become part of the context being considered.

Impact-sensitive decision-making deliberately considers those wider effects — including who may be affected, over what timeframe and where unintended consequences could emerge.
